Iain Oughtred 19' Yawl

Design Concept

The Caledonia Yawl, designed by Iain Oughtred, is a large, versatile, and eye-catching double ender with a breath-taking sheer.  Based on an inshore fishing boat from the Shetland Islands, this 19'9" lapstrake hull decries her powerful Viking ancestry.

This modern version, built by Denman Marine, Kettering, Tasmania, is epoxy-glued marine plywood, and is quick, maneuverable, easy to trailer, and requires low maintenance.  Her simple traditional rig belies a wonderful, seaworthy craft whose performance routinely dazzles observers.  It is an extremely easy boat to sail and is easily sailed one-up.

The custom tilt trailer was designed for easy single handed launch and retrieve and the boat is ideally suited to day sailing and beach/camp cruising for up to 6 adults.

Construction

The backbone is laminated from Celery Top Pine using WEST SYSTEM 105 resin/ 206 hardener and 403 Microfibre Blend.  The lapstrake/clinker hull planking is BS1088 Gaboon Ply, again, glued along the laps with WEST SYSTEM thickened with Microfibre Blend.  All internal and external plank laps received a small fillet of 410 Microlight to soften the lap and to make cleaning the inside of the boat easier.

Internal hull framing is Celery Top Pine and all bulkheads and lockers are filleted with WEST SYSTEM resin/hardener and 411 Microsphere blend.

The fore and aft decks are sheathed in glass cloth laminated with WEST SYSTEM resin/ hardener and the interior joinery also received a layer of 200grm fibreglass tape over 411 Microsphere fillets.

The hull and all internal fitout (except for timber trim) received 2 coats of WEST SYSTEM  resin/ hardener, both inside and out, to seal the timber.  All internal and external fairing was with 410 Microlight, followed by ALTEX high-build and top-coats.

The centerboard was constructed from Tasmanian blue gum (very hard and dense) with lead insert cast in place.  The board then received a layer of 1150grm triaxial down either side, followed by complete sheathing in 400grm double bias E-fibreglass, laminated with WEST SYSTEM resin/hardener.  The rudder was constructed from marine ply and sheathed in 400grm double bias.
